The Anole House - the ideal retreat for the discerning visitor.
The
Anole House Situated at around 1600 feet above sea level and
surrounded by extensive tropical gardens, The Anole House offers possibly
the best views on Saba, looking out over the Caribbean Sea to the islands
of St Eustatius (Statia), St Kitts, Nevis and Montserrat.
Named ‘The Anole House’ after the anole lizard that is endemic
to the island (Anolis Sabanus) and which can be found in the gardens and
on the terraces, the house was built in 1994 by local Saban, Danny Hassell.
Built to high standards with gardens of 4600 sq ft, the living area covers
around 800 square feet and comprises 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, a spacious
kitchen / dining room and a comfortable sitting room with double doors
that open directly onto one of the terraces and the swimming pool. Three
terraces and the pool complete the property and offer a variety of relaxation
/ dining areas.
The house also has a laundry room, for the maid’s use only. A mid-week
laundry service can be provided, on request and for a small additional
fee.
The open access to the pool renders the house unsuitable for children
under 12 years of age.
The telephone will be connected: outgoing local calls may be made; incoming
prepaid calls from anywhere in the world may be received.
With prior notice, a DSL internet connection can be switched on for
an additional fee.
Location Located in an area known as ‘Johnny’s
Ground’ on the steep slopes of Booby Hill, The Anole House sits
in a secluded spot, surrounded by tropical plants and palms with uninterrupted
ocean and island views.
Whilst sitting on one of the terraces listening to ciccedas, tree frogs
or tropic birds, you would be forgiven for thinking that you were a
million miles from the nearest town; yet, The Anole House is only a
10 minute walk or 3 minute taxi ride from the restaurants, bars and
shops of the island’s main tourist village of Windwardside.
If you are walking to the house, you can enter through the back gate,
having taken The Anole House’s own private footpath from the public
road; if driving or coming by taxi, you can enter through the front
gate having driven down a private road from the public road above.
The house faces
due south and benefits from amazing sunrises over the island of Statia
and a plethora of constantly changing colours on the ocean and in the
clouds at sunset. Stunning moonrises are also an intermittent attraction
throughout the year.
The
Sitting Room Definitely a room with a view; with full length
French windows opening out directly onto the pool terrace, you can lie
back and look out over the azure blue waters of the Caribbean Sea and
the islands of Statia, St Kitts, Nevis and Montserrat.
Substantially and comfortably furnished with two sofas (one of which
converts into a queen sized bed), Edwardian wing-back armchair, coffee
table and occasional tables, the sitting room offers you a perfect retreat
from the midday sun and elegant surroundings for a caribbean nightcap.
The sitting room also has a cable TV and a Bose surroundsound entertainment
system providing CD and DVD player and a ‘jack’ connection
with which to connect your Ipod or other personal music player.
The
Kitchen/Dining Room With a double aspect
(one overlooking the ocean and islands and the other looking out to the
dining terrace and pool), the kitchen / dining room is the perfect place
to prepare and eat breakfast, lunch or dinner on those rare days on Saba
when you have chosen to eat at home but are not eating al fresco.
The kitchen is equipped with all the creature comforts of home:
a double sink and drainer; oak kitchen cabinets with granite effect work
surfaces; full sized cooker with large oven, broiler and extractor hood;
microwave; toaster; blender; Alessi coffee maker; cappuccino / espresso
maker; complete set of saucepans, frying pans, casserole dishes etc; crockery,
cutlery, glasses and wine glasses for 6 place settings; and full set of
cook’s kitchen knives.
The dining area has a shaker style dining table and chairs, which can
comfortably seat 6 people.
The kitchen / dining room opens onto the dining terrace and the pool.
The
Master Bedroom Like the rest of the house, the master bedroom is
light and airy with a high, colonial style ceiling.
Furnished simply but elegantly, the master bedroom has a queen sized
bed with two bedside tables with lamps and a dressing table. Ample hanging
and storage is available in the dressing table, a built-in full length
closet, a built-in set of drawers and a further set of drawers.
The
Bathroom The main bathroom is fully tiled with large custom
built walk-in shower, bathroom sink and cabinet unit, low-level wc and
shaver point.
The
Pool and Terraces Probably the most
popular and most used areas of The Anole House are the pool and the terraces
that surround the house – well, you don’t come to the Caribbean
to sit inside all day and night!!
With almost as much living area outside the property as inside, the
pool and terrace area is extensive, offering privacy and uninterrupted
views of the Caribbean Sea and neighbouring islands.
The pool is roughly 20 ft by 10 ft with a shallow end around 3ft 10ins
in depth and a deep end of around 6ft. It has underwater lighting enabling
those spontaneous ‘midnight dips’ and with pool temperatures
rarely dropping below 80 degrees, there really is no time when the pool
cannot be used.
Three terraces offer a choice of places to relax, dine, read a book
or just have a snooze.
The dinner terrace can be accessed directly from the kitchen / dining
room and overlooks the pool and the ocean. Protected from the heat of
the sun and occasional tropical showers by a gazebo style roof, the
dinner terrace provides an idyllic setting in which to enjoy food and
drinks at any time of the day or night. A circular teak table makes
a cosy setting for 2 or 4, people yet will expand to accommodate a party
of 8 comfortably. A high end Weber Bar B Q adjacent to this terrace
means you can barbie without missing out on the party!!
The pool terrace is perfect for sunbathing, reading and relaxing. Very
soon, it will once again be perfect for dining as well, when the coral
sculpture table base (created by renowned Sabian artist Robbie Lynn)
receives its replacement glass table top.
Last but not least, the cocktail terrace, situated in the lower garden
beneath the swimming pool. Move down here in the late afternoon and
watch the sun disappearing behind the upper reaches of Booby Hill, whilst
sipping a rum punch or a cold beer.
